What’s In Season

While I’ve already professed my love for spring and summer fruit, there are many great fruits and vegetables coming into season currently or very soon.
Fruit
Strawberries
Look for strawberries that are shiny, firm and fragrant. A strawberry should be almost completely red, though some whiteness near the leafy cap is acceptable. Refrigerate unwashed strawberries with the caps on until ready to use. Just before using, wash and hull.
Tomatoes
Choose ripe, rich-colored, well-shaped tomatoes that are slightly soft. Keep unwashed tomatoes at room temperature for 1 to 2 days. Keep out of direct sunlight.
Others fruits in season include apricots, blackberries, blueberries, cherries, melons, plums and raspberries.
Vegetables
Summer Squash
Varieties of summer squash include pattypan, sunburst, yellow crookneck and zucchini. Look for squash that have glossy, smooth and firm but tender skins. Small squash are more tender and flavorful. Keep unwashed summer squash in the refrigerator crisper drawer for up to 4 days.
Other seasonal vegetables include asparagus, eggplant, broccoli, carrots, cauliflower, celery, cucumbers, fennel, artichokes, herbs, lettuce, peppers (red, yellow, orange, green, purple) and spinach.
