Meat is Clothing?

Published by jsfarmer under Food News, Food thoughts, TV shows

I stumbled across this site the other day, and I’m not sure whether to be offended or laugh like crazy. While it certainly gives the term edible underwear a run for its money, I’m icked out because of the raw meat on skin action going on.
Even the reality television show “America’s Next Top Model” thought [...]

How to Make Breakfast on the Go

You’ve heard it before but I’m going to say it again–eat your breakfast!
It’s the most important meal of the day, as it “breaks the fast” and it also gives you fuel to get moving and face the day.
If you’re short on time, I have just the trick–a smoothie. You don’t even have to shell out [...]

Rice Rations Hit Stores

Just last week, two U.S. warehouse retail chains (Sam’s Club and Costco) started limiting how much rice customers can buy because of what Sam’s Club, a division of Wal-Mart Stores Inc., called “recent supply and demand trends.”
It may be a case of whch came first (the chicken or the egg), as some experts believe the warehouse [...]

Sublime Salsa

Every week, I have to buy a jar of Frontera’s Salpica Mango Peach Salsa. Have to.
One taste, and immediately I was addicted to this salsa’s sweet yet spicy flavor. I’ve used it on burritos, quesadillas and eggs.
I could have it at every meal, but typically I exhibit a little more restraint than that…and limit myself to once a day.
The salsa [...]

How to Be the Best Restaurant

Published by jsfarmer under Restaurants

It’s not often that a restaurant hits the trifecta–delicious food, superior service and amazing ambiance.
Last week, my husband and I stumbled upon a local restaurant so amazing I had to share the news.
I’ve worked in the restaurant industry, so I know that a server’s job is hard and often thankless. But I also know that, [...]

Savory Spring Salad Recipe

Published by jsfarmer under Magazines, Recipes

I got this recipe out of the February 2007 Sunset magazine, and I have made it a few times now with great results.
Ingredients:
5 slices thick-cut bacon (I substitute with turkey bacon)
4 large heads Belgian endive, trimmed and coarsely chopped (I substitute with Napa cabbage)
2 ripe avocados, chopped
1/2 cup gorgonzola cheese, crumbled
2 tbsp. minced shallot
1 tbsp. sherry vinegar
1/4 [...]

The Cost of Convenience (Foods)

Published by jsfarmer under Food News, Food thoughts

A recent article got me thinking about the convenience foods I rely on daily/weekly.
While they may cost more in the long run, in the short run, convenience items save me time–time I use to work, play, etc.
Some may consider it “cheating” to use store-bought pasta, frozen pizza, or frozen oatmeal, but I rely on these products to [...]

What is it about Jamie Oliver (aka the Naked Chef)?
Sure, he’s cute, and that accent makes me swoon, but I love how easy-going he is about cooking–so laid back and cool.
Here are some Naked Chef highlights:

How to Run an Efficient Refrigerator

Published by jsfarmer under Appliances

Because your refrigerator/freezer is always running, it’s important that you’re using it efficiently. In most households, the refrigerator is the single biggest energy consuming kitchen appliance.
If you replace a refrigerator bought in 1990 with a new ENERGY STAR qualified model, you would save enough energy to light your (average-sized) household for nearly four months.
According to the [...]
